The National Instructors Seminar was very interesting this year. It was held at Tenshinkan Dojo, in downtown Chicago, and there were some unusual arrangements that worked out very well.
The Friday classes were organized into a morning session and an evening session. This left the afternoon free for some serious sightseeing. Since this is the beginning of the baseball season and Wrigley Field is within walking distance of Tenshinkan, some people spent their free time watching the Cubs begin the season (The Cubs won 3-2 against Pittsburgh, and the weather was awesome!). Other people had a chance to check out the downtown area of Chicago, including the Field Museum and Millennium Park.
Because Tenshinkan is so well-situated for public transportation in Chicago, many out of town visitors didn’t have to rent cars. You can get to either airport on the L, and you really don’t want to worry about parking when you’re in the neighborhood of Lakeview/Wrigleyville.
Considering that there were already two Instructors Seminars in 2008 (East Coast Instructors Seminar February 15-17, Methuen, MA and West Coast Instructors Seminar February 29-March 2, San Diego, CA), it was pretty impressive to see how far some people had come for the National Instructors Seminar. I met people from Oregon as well as the students from Ft. Hayes State College in Kansas, who had a very long drive to reach Chicago.
