An Inspirational Gift from Spain

In Spain, Aikidoka are currently celebrating the end of the 2007-2008 season. Maite Sensei (sandan) of AIKISUR in Spain wrote a brief story as reflecting on the past season.

You can read it in English and its original Spanish below.

AIKIDO

2007 – 2008

Upon having finished classes, while the teacher was organizing a few documents on his desk, a student approached him and said:- “Teacher, what makes me even happier about having finished the course is that I will not have to listen to any more of your silly sayings and I will stop having to see your boring face.”

The teacher, looking at the student, said to him:

- “You know, whenever someone offers me something, I don’t always accept it.”

- “What are you trying to say?” the student asked.

- “In your case, these emotions of anger and rancor with which you intend to offend me, do not interest me. ”

- “I do not understand you,” - the pupil said again/continued.

- “It’s very simple,” answered the teacher. “You are offering me anger and scorn, and if I feel offended or become furious, I will be accepting your gift, but in truth I prefer giving in to my own serenity. Your anger will pass; do not try to leave it with me, because I’m not interested.”

- “I cannot control what you carry in your heart but, for me, it matters what I have in mine.”

Every day, in every moment, you can choose what emotions or feelings you want to put inside you, and what you choose will take with you until you decide to change it, for that is what Liberty gives us in Life, the option to become bitter or to be happy is is ours alone.

AIKIDO

2007 - 2008
